DAs for Life work in Nursing Homes
May 23, 2012
We have just completed a four month contract to train residents and personnel of registered nursing homes in the Nottingham region funded by the Department of Health through the Get Connected programme. We worked with 5 establishments, three in Sherwood, one in Ilkeston and a hospice in Newark. For those that took part it was very stimulating and I particularly enjoyed meeting lots of day patients at Beaumond Hospice.
Ian and Mackenzie at the Red House a home for people with learning dificulties in Ilkeston. Mackenzie is a member of staff from Tanzania and for the home we devised a worksheet on how to complete a form concerned with GP surgery visits in Word and how to save to your personal folder. I was also able to assist Mackenzie in using the council housing online system and searching for housing associations and buying a car online.
This is Joyce and Donald, they live independently in flats in an extra care complex at the Firs in Sherwood. Joyce needed her desk and systems moving from the hall to the lounge, she is an organist with a keen interest in music over the decades, both are in their 90's. I was able to introduce Joyce to the wonderful music video library that is Youtube and after replacing Donalds security with Microsoft Essentials and anti spyware he benefited greatly from iplayer, ITV player and Channel 4OD. Donald commented " I think the programme is marvellous, it's really brought my computer to life and I look forward to my sessions each week."
